Our first Flower Pots and Cookin' Pots event

This neighborhood event featured:

  • Native plant seedlings, such as Purple Poppy Mallow, Purple Cone Flower, Wild Sweet William, and Wild Ginger

  • Native seeds, including False Blue Indigo, Common Milkweed, Black Eyed Susan, Purple Prairie Clover, Purple Passion Flower, and Gray Headed Coneflower

  • Dutch Oven Cooking demo featuring home-made specialties such as Cowboy Beans, Cheesy Potatoes, and Peach Dump Cake

Fifty people joined in the fun, sharing seeds, taking seedlings, and sampling food.  Twenty seedlings found new homes that day, and at least 10 more were planted throughout the neighborhood the following week.

Several people were so excited about this event they showed up early with several varieties of seeds to share, and took home several more varieties.

With time this event could grow and really help make a difference in changing attitudes toward native plants, native pollinators and wildlife, and spurring people to taking action!

Sharon and Mary hosted a NatureHood table at the Rountree Elementary School annual PTA fundraiser, Owlapalooza.

  • Coloring sheets for kids

  • Information for kids and families about insects and other wildlife

  • Packets filled with information about Springfield environmental services

This fundraiser is a popular event.  Hundreds of families came to ride rides, eat food, play games, and meet with teachers and staff.  Sharon and Mary had a great time, and helped get the word out about native plants and pollinators!
