Celebrating Butterflies, Bees and all Pollinators! June 18!
On Saturday, June 18 from 10 am - 1 pm the third annual Butterflies and Bees Celebration will take over the corner of Cherry and Pickwick in the center of Springfield, MO. We invite you to help us kick off National Pollinator Week by joining us for this celebration! With over 400 species of bees native to Missouri, we have a lot to celebrate!
Butterflies and Bees Celebration was first created out of concern for the plight of the Monarch Butterflies. From the beginning we've sought to garner public interest in pollinators and the roles they play in our lives, and educate people about some very simple, basic things everyone can do to help pollinators. The 2014 and 2015 events were very popular and successful, and we expect this year's event to be as fun and exciting.
As always we will have native plant seedlings, including shrubs, to give away. We will have a Science Station with microscopes and slides of butterfly and bee wings. Our Demonstration Station will feature simple things anyone can do to help pollinators. And the Information Station contains handouts and publications about Missouri native plants and pollinators.
This year for the first time we will have face painting! And, of course, the Craft Station will keep the little ones busy creating fun mementos to remember the day.
The stars of the show, of course, will be the butterflies, moths and caterpillars brought to us by a representative of the Dr. Bill Roston Native Butterfly House. Event attendees are able to see these beautiful pollinators up close, and learn what the pollinators need to survive. During the 2015 event two Monarch Butterflies eclosed from their chrysalis! What a great highlight to the day!
